CURRENT CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The Visionary

Introduction

The team at Brightstone Books is creating an immersive experience for their flagship mythopoeic dark fantasy series, Mystic. Beginning with traditional print books, the project extends to a soundscape audiobook with a full voice cast, original soundtrack, and atmospheric sound effects. Additionally, weekly 5-minute visual episodes of the soundscape audiobook will be released on YouTube, using concept art from notable fantasy artists to bring an added layer of immersion. At the same time, the interactive ebook app will provide a more hands-on approach, with embedded links within the story to additional lore, maps, and character backgrounds, all to envelop the reader more fully into the world. Beyond these core projects, Brightstone Books also has plans for a documentary-style lore video series, interactive role-playing experiences, and more.

The Position

You are the Visionary, and you have a gift for seeing the unseen. The words written in Mystic become vivid scenes in your mind, with sights, sounds, and even the smells of locations feeling tangible. This ability allows you to provide guidance for the art used across our various platforms, especially in our visual audiobook series, where you serve as the primary editor. Your intimate knowledge of the world of Atha also extends into lore writing for our growing library. And let us not forget your ability to identify businesses that may benefit from mutually rewarding sponsorship placements across our channels. In fine, the position of the Visionary has three roles: Creative, Analytical, and Business.

1) Creative Role: Visual Storyboard Director & Lore Expansion

As Visual Storyboard Director, you will read through the manuscript to identify moments where visual elements would support the story in our cinematic audiobook episodes. You’ll propose art ideas tied to specific scenes, making sure they match the atmosphere and style of Mystic. You’ll gather feedback from AJ and the team and work with the High Chamberlain to finalize direction before the production of the art. In addition to visual planning, you’ll write lore focused on traditions, rituals, festivals, and belief systems, and help produce content for our growing library.
Compensation: $30/hour

2) Analytical Role: Visual Audiobook Editor, Graphic Design, Newsletter

As Visual Audiobook Editor, you will assemble 5-minute episodes for YouTube using narration, art, and audio. You’ll make creative calls on timing, sequence, and transitions to ensure each episode supports the tone of the scene. For graphic design, you will also prepare graphics for use across various platforms. You’ll also handle newsletters—designing, scheduling, and adjusting based on data—and report what works best.
Compensation: $27/hour

3) Business Role: Sponsorship Acquisition

You find companies or creators whose audiences match ours and offer placement through our content. This includes our video episodes, website, app, wiki, and future expos. The focus is on connecting the right sponsor with the right platform in a way that makes sense for both sides.

If done right, this isn’t sales. It’s offering opportunity. If someone offered us placement in the next Lord of the Rings film, we’d recognize the value immediately. You’re doing the same in reverse. For example, a newer fantasy collectible brand might be offered early website placement at a lower cost than what that same space could be worth a year from now. Whether it’s a small business or a larger company, the value comes from timing and fit.

Smaller placements may range from $250 to $1,000. Larger packages can go higher depending on scope.
Compensation: Training is paid at $20/hour for the first 2–4 weeks so you can feel confident in your role. After that, compensation is performance-based.

Team Meetings

In-person team meetings will be held quarterly at our office in Salt Lake City, though this may vary depending on our needs. If you are located outside of Utah but within the USA, that's no problem, we will cover your travel and accommodation for these meetings. If you are remote only, please let us know before applying.

What We’re Looking For

  • Interest and skills in cultural worldbuilding and fantasy storywriting

  • Ability to translate written scenes into strong visual concepts

  • Familiarity with Final Cut Pro (preferred) or DaVinci Resolve for video editing

  • Comfortable designing visual assets for newsletters or social platforms using tools like Canva

  • Strong communication skills, especially when coordinating feedback or handling outreach

  • Confident identifying sponsors or brand opportunities that make strategic sense

  • Organized, deadline-aware, and consistent with asset management and follow-through

Hours & Compensation

Monthly compensation: $30/hour for Creative and $27/hour for Analytical, as described above. For Business, compensation is performance-based, with hourly pay provided during the first 2–4 weeks of training at $20/hour.

Hours: You may choose how many hours you want to work when you apply, up to 25 hours per month per role — but the hours must be equal across all three roles. For example, if you choose 25 hours for Creative, then Business and Analytical must also be 25 hours, totaling 75 hours. You're welcome to exceed your Business hours, since that role is performance-based, not hourly. In this position, hourly pay applies only to your Creative and Analytical roles. The Business role is compensated based on your results each month. Full-time paid hours are only available after you’ve been with us for 6–12 months.

Flexibility: This is an independent contractor position, allowing you to set your own schedule to accomplish projects. Aside from our meetings, you're free to work at the location of your choice. No taxes will be taken from your pay; you will be responsible for your own taxes and benefits.

How to Apply

Provide a resume or a summary of relevant experience and education. Introduce yourself and briefly explain why you believe you'd be a good fit for the position, specifically referencing the three roles mentioned above. Be sure to include how many hours you'd like to work per month, as outlined above. Submit your application to careers@brightstonebooks.com with the subject line “The Visionary Application.”

You will be notified if you have made it to the second round no later than May 21st.
